Pictures from the Strade Bianche 3 marzo 2012
Here are some pictures from the pro-cycling race Strade Bianche 2012. In the morning I took a quick spin up to the town of Gaiole in Chianti from where it sets off. Then I took a lift back with Derek and we watched the rest from my house on Rai Sports Due, stepping outside to watch it come past my house on Strada delle Tolfe, about 11 km from the finish, and then dived back in to watch the finale.
On the Friday evening on the TV there were several shots of our road as being one of the pivotal places that attacks could happen. As it was the key attack did happen here - the lead rider was away for a few seconds before coming onto our road, he was caught on the climb and Fabian Cancellara just rode away from him and the rest of the field. By the time we got back inside to watch the TV he was over 50 seconds up.
Anyway, it was a great day, bright and sunny and warm - well it was in the afternoon anyway. In the morning it was absolutely brassic and really foggy, almost dangerously foggy on some of the roads I was riding. It always is foggy in Siena, especially in the mornings, and that morning the fog was hanging and really occupying some of the lower-lying valleys. Also, past Gaiole it is very hilly (up to 2000 ft), and there were some patches of snow still left.
On to the photos - a few from the start first (Cadel Evans and Cancellara):
And some more from our road. There were lots of supporters - maybe 150 in total, a jellyflopter overhead and some proper cycling fans had set up some tables and were eating and drinking in comfort - pro-watching skillz.
